What a Secchi depth reading measures
A Secchi disk is lowered into the water until it is no longer visible. The depth at that point is recorded as the Secchi depth. A deeper reading usually indicates clearer water, while a shallower reading indicates that algae, sediment, or other particles are limiting visibility.
Why water clarity matters
Water clarity affects how light moves through the water column, how aquatic plants grow, how people experience the lake, and how easily fish and other organisms can find food or avoid predators. A change in clarity is not a diagnosis by itself, but it is a useful signal that conditions may be changing.

- Record date, time, weather, recent rainfall, and observer notes.
- Pair clarity with temperature, dissolved oxygen, algae indicators, turbidity, and nutrient data when the management question requires it.
Use comparisons carefully
Secchi readings can help compare locations or lakes, but depth, color, watershed, geology, wind exposure, and intended use all matter. The best benchmark is usually the water body's own historical range, supported by relevant regional or regulatory context.
Keep the measurement in the management record
Store Secchi readings alongside field notes, photos, laboratory results, sensor data, and management actions. That complete record gives a lake manager more context than a spreadsheet of clarity values alone.
