A diverse set of photosynthetic aquatic organisms found as plankton, attached growths, or larger visible forms; algae are not one taxonomic group.

Scope and limits: The term is ecological and informal. It includes eukaryotic algae and, in common lake speech, cyanobacteria, even though cyanobacteria are bacteria.

Photosynthetic bacteria found in aquatic environments; some taxa can form dense blooms or surface accumulations under favorable conditions.

Scope and limits: Cyanobacteria are bacteria, not eukaryotic algae. Some taxa can produce cyanotoxins, but toxin production is species- and condition-dependent and cannot be assumed from appearance alone.

Also called: HAB, harmful cyanobacterial bloom

A bloom that causes or is likely to cause harm to people, animals, or ecosystems through toxins, high biomass, oxygen stress, taste-and-odor compounds, or other effects.

Scope and limits: Not every dense algal bloom is harmful, and not every HAB is toxic. Recreational safety decisions require site-specific screening and, where indicated, toxin testing rather than visual judgment alone.

Scope and limits: Chlorophyll-a is a biomass indicator, not a direct total-biomass measurement, species identity, toxin result, or bloom-safety determination. Method, extraction, and fluorometric versus spectrophotometric protocols affect comparability.

A toxic compound produced by some cyanobacteria; named toxin families and congeners require method-specific evidence.

Scope and limits: Cyanobacteria, a bloom, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, or a toxin-production gene does not by itself establish the concentration of a cyanotoxin. A result is bounded by the named analytes, method, fraction, preparation, reporting limits, sample, place, and time.

Scope and limits: A total-microcystins result and a congener-specific result are not automatically interchangeable. Record the method target, preparation, fraction, calibration basis, unit, and qualifiers rather than shortening every result to 'microcystin.'

Scope and limits: The word 'total' is not self-defining. Record the toxin target, sample preparation, lysis or extraction, method, recovery, and reporting basis; do not assume every intracellular and extracellular form was measured quantitatively.

A method-defined result intended to represent a dissolved or extracellular cyanotoxin fraction after the specified separation and handling procedure.

Scope and limits: The operational fraction depends on the filter or separation, timing, handling, and method. It does not represent toxin retained in cells and should not be subtracted from another result unless both methods support that calculation.

A sample deliberately collected from a visible or otherwise selected bloom accumulation to answer a defined local question about that feature.

Scope and limits: A targeted sample can characterize a concentrated exposure location but is not an unbiased estimate of average lake conditions. Label the selection rule and never silently combine it with representative-program results.

A HAB sample collected under a stated spatial, depth, timing, and compositing design intended to represent a named population or decision unit.

Scope and limits: Representativeness is a property of the design and target population, not a bottle. A routine sample can miss a transient shoreline accumulation, while a targeted sample can overstate average conditions; both may be appropriate for different questions.

Vertical separation of lake water into layers with different temperatures and densities, often persisting when surface water remains warmer and less dense than deeper water.

Scope and limits: Whether a lake stratifies depends on depth, fetch, wind, inflows, and basin shape, not a single depth threshold. Stratification reduces vertical mixing and can isolate bottom water from atmospheric oxygen.

The upper, relatively well-mixed layer above the metalimnion during stratified conditions.

Scope and limits: Wind, fetch, and inflows can keep the epilimnion thicker or more mixed than textbook diagrams suggest. Daytime photosynthesis can raise surface dissolved oxygen here.

The layer between epilimnion and hypolimnion where temperature changes most rapidly with depth during stratification.

Scope and limits: The metalimnion is a layer concept. It is related to, but not identical with, the thermocline, which is often defined operationally from a temperature-gradient criterion.

The depth interval where temperature decreases most steeply with depth, often identified from profile data using a defined gradient threshold.

The deeper, denser layer below the metalimnion when persistent stratification exists.

Scope and limits: A hypolimnion can be oxygenated, hypoxic, or anoxic depending on depth, organic loading, duration of isolation, and mixing history. Low oxygen here does not by itself prove internal phosphorus release.

A period when wind and seasonal density changes mix much or all of the water column, redistributing heat, oxygen, and dissolved substances.

Scope and limits: Many temperate lakes mix in spring and fall, but timing and completeness vary with climate, depth, salinity, and wind exposure. Shallow or wind-exposed ponds may mix frequently without classic twice-yearly turnover.

The negative base-10 logarithm of hydrogen-ion activity, used to describe the acid-base condition of water.

Scope and limits: pH describes instantaneous acidity or basicity. It differs from alkalinity, hardness, and buffering capacity, which describe resistance to pH change.

The capacity of water to neutralize added acid, commonly reported as milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate.

Scope and limits: Alkalinity reflects buffering, not current pH. Lakes with similar pH can have very different stability if alkalinity differs. Reporting base and titration endpoint must be stated.

Conductivity measures how well water conducts electricity from dissolved ions. Specific conductance is conductivity normalized to a reference temperature, usually 25 °C.

Scope and limits: Specific conductance is temperature-adjusted conductivity. Neither is a direct measure of any single constituent, and neither is interchangeable with total dissolved solids without a documented local relation.

The mass of dissolved material in a water sample, usually reported in milligrams per liter.

Scope and limits: TDS may be measured gravimetrically in the laboratory or estimated from conductivity using an empirical multiplier. Measured and estimated values should not be treated as equivalent without method documentation.

A measure of how suspended particles scatter light in water, commonly reported in nephelometric turbidity units (NTU).

Scope and limits: Turbidity is an optical property, not a mass concentration. Particle size, color, and instrument geometry affect readings. It cannot be converted to total suspended solids without a site-specific relation.

The depth at which a standard Secchi disk disappears from view, used as a simple integrated measure of water clarity.

Scope and limits: Secchi depth depends on sun angle, surface glare, observer, algae color, dissolved color, and suspended material. It complements, but does not replace, turbidity or chlorophyll measurements.

Scope and limits: TSS is a gravimetric mass concentration. It is not interchangeable with turbidity or Secchi depth without local calibration and consistent sampling methods.

Scope and limits: Nitrogen limitation, co-limitation, or phosphorus limitation varies by lake and season. Total nitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, total ammonia nitrogen, un-ionized ammonia, ammonium, and organic nitrogen are related but not interchangeable measurands. Record the exact species or aggregate, fraction, method, unit, and reporting basis.

A method-defined combined quantity of un-ionized ammonia (NH3) and ammonium (NH4+) in the analyzed sample, commonly reported on a nitrogen-mass basis.

Scope and limits: TAN includes both ammonia forms but is not interchangeable with NH3, NH4+, total nitrogen, or nitrate. Interpretation retains the exact method, matrix and fraction, as-N or other reporting basis, unit, qualifier, detection or reporting limit, pH, temperature, location, depth, time, exposure context, and applicable authority.

Scope and limits: NH3 is generally more toxic to aquatic life than NH4+, but it is not interchangeable with TAN or ammonium. A reporting-basis conversion does not calculate the NH3 fraction; interpretation requires an applicable equilibrium or criterion method and matched environmental context.

A mass-reporting convention that expresses the nitrogen portion of a nitrogen-containing measurand rather than the mass of the full chemical formula.

Scope and limits: As N is a reporting basis, not a chemical species or fraction. Values reported as N and as NH3 cannot be compared until an approved molecular-mass conversion is documented; that conversion does not determine how TAN is partitioned between NH3 and NH4+.

Also called: nutrient enrichment, cultural eutrophication

The process by which nutrient enrichment increases primary production and can alter clarity, oxygen dynamics, and biological community structure.

Scope and limits: Trophic descriptors and eutrophication classifications are comparative tools. They are not universal moral grades of lake health and should be interpreted against local reference conditions and management goals.
