    Connect temperature to water-column structure

    Understand density, layer formation, seasonal variability, and habitat tradeoffs.

    Field exercise

    List the cold- and warm-water receptors relevant to the lake and the evidence needed to define their conditions.

  3. Understand · 24 minutes

    Separate TAN, NH3, NH4+, and reporting as N

    Interpret freshwater ammonia only with paired pH and temperature, exposure duration and frequency, receptor, method, fraction, reporting basis, qualifiers, limits, and applicable criterion context.

    Field exercise

    Audit one laboratory report and label the exact measurand, as-N or other basis, matrix and fraction, method, unit, qualifier, detection and reporting limits, paired pH and temperature, represented station/depth/time, and unresolved criterion fields.

    Did you avoid treating TAN as un-ionized NH3, a non-detect as zero, or a national recommendation as an automatically adopted local standard?

    Collect a defensible DO profile

    Tie calibration, stabilization, depth reference, instrument settings, and timing to data quality.

    Field exercise

    Write the pre-cast, at-depth, and post-cast QA sequence for the selected instrument and project method.

    Can every reading be traced to an instrument, QA record, station, depth reference, and time?

  5. Measure · 30 minutes

    Collect paired ammonia evidence

    Coordinate authority and receiving laboratory before collection, then preserve representative design, paired field context, method-specific handling, custody, QC, qualifiers, limits, and validation state.

    Field exercise

    Draft an ammonia sample-to-result plan naming authority or case, receiving laboratory, measurand and basis, method and fraction, stations/depths/timing, paired pH/temperature/DO record IDs, container and handling source, custody, QC, limits, and validation owner.

    Checkpoint

    Could the field crew and laboratory execute the plan without inventing a bottle, preservative, holding time, reporting basis, or criterion, and without diagnosing fish-kill cause?

    Use the profile field sheet

    Preserve raw sequence, replicates, as-collected units, canonical units, conditions, and validation state.

    Field exercise

    Record one complete practice cast, including total depth, bottom clearance, UTC offset, pre/post verification, and raw-file location.

    Did the record retain replicates and anomalies instead of smoothing or deleting them?

    Inspect the profile transparently

    Plot paired evidence and inspect adjacent temperature changes without automatic diagnosis.

    Field exercise

    Load the practice cast, review excluded replicate intervals, and export the provenance-rich CSV.

  8. Decide · 24 minutes

    Interpret habitat overlap conservatively

    Compare measured conditions with an explicitly sourced receptor/use context and repeated observations.

    Field exercise

    Write three statements: supported by this profile, plausible but unconfirmed, and not answerable from this profile.

    Are criterion source, species/use, life stage, duration, method, and jurisdiction explicit?

  9. Decide · 20 minutes

    Know the fish-kill escalation boundary

    Protect people and animals, preserve evidence, notify correctly, and avoid uncontrolled intervention.

    Field exercise

    Pre-fill only the jurisdiction/contact-control portion of the incident sheet and verify who owns after-hours notification.

    Could the team act safely without entering water or assuming low oxygen caused mortality?

  10. Decide · 25 minutes

    Compare oxygen-management mechanisms

    Separate surface aeration, destratification, and deep-water oxygenation by physical mechanism and habitat effect.

    Field exercise

    For each plausible mechanism, list target zone, protected resource, adverse endpoint, required design evidence, and verification measurement.
