Assessment services: understanding what you are working with
Every useful consulting engagement starts with an assessment. This is the diagnostic phase where the consultant gathers baseline data about your waterbody, water chemistry, sediment type and depth, biological indicators, shoreline condition, and the watershed inputs that are feeding the lake or pond. Without this step, any recommendations are guesswork.
A thorough assessment usually involves at least one site visit, water sampling at multiple points and depths, sediment probing, and a visual survey of the shoreline and surrounding land use. The consultant should provide a written report summarizing findings, identifying problem areas, and explaining what is driving the conditions you are seeing.
- Water chemistry testing: nutrients, dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity, and clarity.
- Sediment analysis: type, depth, and organic content of bottom material.
- Watershed review: identifying nutrient sources, runoff patterns, and land use impacts.
Planning and treatment coordination
Once the assessment identifies what is going on, the planning phase translates those findings into a course of action. A management plan lays out what interventions are recommended, in what order, on what timeline, and at what estimated cost. Good plans also define what success looks like: measurable goals tied to specific water quality parameters or physical improvements.
Treatment coordination means the consultant either performs or oversees the implementation of recommended actions. That might include aeration system design and installation, biological treatment programs, aquatic plant management, shoreline stabilization, or nutrient source control measures. Some consultants handle all of this in-house; others coordinate with specialized contractors and manage the project.

Ongoing monitoring and adaptive management
A single assessment gives you a snapshot. Ongoing monitoring gives you the trend. Regular water quality testing, monthly during the active season, at minimum, lets you and your consultant track whether conditions are improving, holding steady, or getting worse. That data is what makes the management plan a living document rather than a binder on a shelf.
Adaptive management is the practice of adjusting your approach based on what the monitoring data tells you. If nutrient levels are not declining as expected, you investigate why and change course. If a treatment is working well in one area but not another, you shift resources.
