What a field log should capture
A field log for a lake management visit should capture, at minimum: the date and time of the visit, the technician who was on site, the site conditions observed (water color, odor, visible algae or vegetation, shoreline conditions), any measurements taken with handheld instruments, any actions taken (treatment application, equipment check, sample collection), and any observations that are out of the ordinary.
Photos are often underused in field logging but are one of the most valuable records in hindsight. A photo of the north shoreline in June compared to the same angle the following June is more immediately legible than a text description, and it is far more defensible if a question about site condition arises later.

The long-term value of a field log is not in any individual entry, it is in what that entry looks like alongside the thirty entries before it. Was this week's dissolved oxygen reading higher or lower than the same week last year? Was the odor observation on Tuesday an isolated event or the fourth time that note has appeared in the past two months? Answering those questions requires the logs to be stored in a system that makes them queryable, not just retrievable.
