What causes lake and pond odor
The most common lake odor is the rotten egg smell of hydrogen sulfide, produced when organic matter decomposes in the absence of oxygen. This anaerobic decomposition happens at the sediment surface where accumulated muck sits in oxygen-depleted water. When the water is disturbed, by wading, boating, storms, or fall turnover, these gases are released into the air and the smell can be overwhelming.
Other odors include musty or earthy smells caused by compounds called geosmin and MIB, produced by certain algae and cyanobacteria. Fishy smells may indicate a recent die-off of fish or algae. Septic smells can indicate nearby septic system failure contributing nutrients and organic matter to the waterbody. In all cases, the underlying theme is too much organic material decomposing with too little oxygen.

How to reduce lake and pond odor
Aeration is the most effective tool for reducing odor because it addresses the root cause, lack of oxygen at the bottom. By circulating oxygenated water to the sediment surface, aeration shifts decomposition from anaerobic (smelly) to aerobic (odor-free). Hydrogen sulfide cannot form in the presence of adequate dissolved oxygen. Most pond owners notice a significant reduction in odor within weeks of installing an aeration system.
Reducing the organic load also helps. Biological muck treatment products introduce bacteria that accelerate the breakdown of organic sediment under aerobic conditions, gradually reducing the volume of material that can produce odor. Removing leaf litter, managing goose populations, and preventing grass clippings from entering the water all reduce the ongoing input of organic matter. For ponds with severe muck accumulation, aeration alone may not be enough to overcome the oxygen demand, combining it with biological treatment or considering dredging for the worst areas may be necessary.
