Ponds are more vulnerable to algae problems than larger lakes for several reasons. They are shallower, which means the entire water column warms quickly and sunlight reaches the bottom. They have a higher ratio of shoreline and watershed to water volume, so nutrient inputs from surrounding land have an outsized impact. And because ponds are small, even modest nutrient sources, a few bags of lawn fertilizer applied nearby, a flock of Canada geese, or a handful of overfed fish, can shift the water chemistry enough to trigger persistent green water.

Many ponds also accumulate organic muck on the bottom over years and decades. As this muck decomposes, it releases nutrients back into the water column, feeding algae from below even when external nutrient sources are controlled. This internal nutrient cycling is one of the main reasons algae keeps coming back year after year in older ponds.

Biological products that introduce beneficial bacteria can help break down organic muck and reduce the nutrient pool over time. They work best in aerated ponds where the bacteria have the oxygen they need to do their job. Chemical algaecides like copper sulfate or hydrogen peroxide-based products can knock down active algae quickly, but the effect is temporary. Without addressing nutrients, you will be applying algaecide repeatedly.
