Duckweed is one of the fastest-growing plants on earth. A single plant can double in as few as two days under ideal conditions. It floats on the surface, requires no rooting in sediment, and reproduces primarily through budding rather than seeds, meaning it does not need pollinators or flowering to spread. Once established in a nutrient-rich pond, it can cover the entire surface within a week or two during warm weather.

The factors that favor duckweed are simple: high nutrients (especially nitrogen), warm water, still conditions, and shelter from wind. Ponds near agricultural land, heavily fertilized lawns, or areas with concentrated waterfowl are especially prone. Ironically, a complete duckweed cover blocks sunlight and suppresses algae, so ponds shift from green water to a green blanket, trading one problem for another.
